What to Do When Your Chevrolet Tire Pressure Light Comes On

Seeing your tire pressure light appear on your dashboard can be alarming, but it’s actually a helpful safety feature designed to keep you and your vehicle in top condition. Modern Chevrolet vehicles are equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that alerts you when one or more tires are underinflated. Low tire pressure can affect your fuel efficiency, tire lifespan, and—most importantly—your safety on the road. If your tire pressure light comes on, here are the steps you should take.
1. Don’t Panic, But Don’t Ignore It
The TPMS light doesn’t always mean an emergency. Sometimes, a sudden change in temperature can cause a temporary drop in tire pressure. Still, you’ll want to address it promptly to avoid uneven tire wear or a potential blowout.
2. Check Your Tire Pressure
Pull over safely and use a tire pressure gauge to measure the pressure in each tire, including the spare. Compare your readings with the recommended PSI listed in your owner’s manual or on the sticker inside the driver’s side door.
3. Inflate to the Recommended Level
If one or more tires are below the recommended PSI, add air until they reach the correct level. Many gas stations have air pumps, or you can use a home air compressor if available. Avoid overinflating, as too much pressure can cause poor handling and premature tire wear.
4. Inspect for Damage
If a tire continues to lose air after inflation, you may have a puncture, leak, or other issue. Look for nails, cracks, or visible damage. In this case, it’s best to schedule service right away.
5. Reset the TPMS Light if Needed
In some vehicles, the light will turn off automatically once the tires are properly inflated. In others, you may need to reset the TPMS manually. Refer to your Chevrolet owner’s manual for instructions.
